The loyal player, who buys lottery tickets weekly, had set aside time to check his numbers but got briefly distracted, he said.
While he thought he had reviewed all his tickets, he missed one. It was only thanks to a family member, who volunteered to scan the tickets on her Maryland Lottery app, that the winning ticket was discovered.
As the car pulled away, she saw the ticket’s result and ran after him, signaling the life-changing news with a huge smile.
“I thought something was wrong when I saw her in the rear view mirror," the truck driver mused. "When she got to the door, though, I knew it was good news. She had such a smile.”
The ticket, purchased as a $2 quick pick from Check Cash Depot in Brooklyn, brought the store a $2,500 bonus as well.
The truck driver is considering using his prize for a new home and a vehicle, he said. This is Maryland’s third $1 million Mega Millions win this year, and excitement is building for the next draw, offering a jackpot of $334 million.
